Pathways for Tech Workers
Canada aggressively targets technology talent through specialized streams. Software engineers, data scientists, and IT managers have distinct advantages in the immigration system.
Global Talent Stream (GTS)
The GTS is a temporary work permit pathway designed for innovative companies to hire highly skilled foreign talent quickly. It features a target processing time of just two weeks. This is employer-driven; you need a job offer from an eligible Canadian company.
Express Entry (STEM Draws)
Under the new category-based selection, IRCC conducts draws specifically for STEM occupations. If you have 6 months of experience in a targeted NOC (e.g., 21211 Data Scientists, 21231 Software Engineers), you can receive an ITA with a lower CRS score than a general draw.
Provincial Tech Pathways
Several provinces run specific PNP streams for tech workers:
- BC PNP Tech: Weekly draws for 35 eligible tech occupations. Requires a 1-year job offer.
- OINP Tech Draws: Ontario searches the Express Entry pool for candidates with experience in 6 specific tech NOCs.
